Classes for Children
Melissa Mannon offers classes to children interested in learning about photography. She possesses a degree in art history and a master's in library science. With experience as a young adult librarian, Melissa focuses her classes for kids ages 8 and up.
Introduction to Photography - This is a two part class for kids ages 8-12. The class focuses on the three main elements needed to take good photographs and to create interesting artwork: composition, lighting, and subject. In the first session, Melissa introduces these elements and shows kids images created by famous artists that demonstrate these basic ideas. Students then take photographs to bring back to the second session. The second session is a critique that focuses on the concepts learned in part one. Students must supply their own camera (digital, film, or disposable are all acceptable) and must print images to bring to session two.
Introduction to Art History - This class is for the focused child with a predisposition toward the arts or history. It offers a more in depth look at art throughout time than one would normally receive in a secondary school program. Children are shown images by some of the best known artists from the past six hundred years. Discussions focus on: What is good art? What makes a good subject? What makes a good composition? How has art changed over time? What does art mean to us today?
